Ski
and snowboard enthusiasts need all the support they can get when
it comes to knees and backs. A strong back is a sign of good health.
The back is the 'keystone' in our physical structure, it supports
us as we move around, sit down and stand up and also works to
support the fragile knee joints by taking some of the load off
them.
One of the biggest complaints from first time
skiers/boarders after a day on the slopes is of sore leg muscles,
especially in the hamstrings. First timers or anyone who doesn't
stretch much will greatly benefit from Yoga postures.
Having a strong and flexible physical body
will add joy to that feeling of freedom for this sport that require
100% strength from the start to the finish of the run. Unlike
many other sports, there is no rest time or stopping and starting
periods during the run.
Good balance is the key for skiers and boarders
as our centre point of gravity is always shifting to maintain
an upright position and our bodies are constantly realigning to
position correctly. Yoga postures teach us balance. Our legs and
feet are our foundation. A stable foundation to rely on allows
for the upper body to move freely and with ease.
Yoga teaches us, through breath and body awareness,
to be more present in the moment. When we are completely present
there is no thought and no fear. Being on the slopes and in this
no-mind state is the experience that brings enthusiasts back season
after season.
When exhausted and sore at the end of a big
day on the slopes make the time to practice relaxing postures
and you'll feel a lot better for it. The bodies energy levels
restore and the mind is calmed.
