Australian Vital - Issue 02: July 2002 'Before
Yoga TV there was Jessie Chapman. Based in Byron Bay, Jessie started
practicing yoga in 1991 and exploring the effects of the ancient
art on the body and mind. In 1999 her little square book 'Yoga
Postures for your Body, Mind & Soul' (HarperCollins) was published
and became a treasured item in many households. Thanks in no short
measure to its stunning black & white photos of yoga poses
on the beach, its simple instructions and relaxed layout. Her
third, equally beautiful book, 'Partner Yoga for your Body, Mind
& Soul', has just been released. Folks looking for kinky tantric
positions may be disappointed but yoga lovers, new and seasoned,
interested in ways to make yoga an interactive experience can
expect to be as impressed as they were with her other books. As
Jessie says "Yoga means union. Joining together with a partner
in practice - breathing together, supporting one another - enhances
awareness and brings new depth to relationships".'

Postures for your Body, Mind & Soul
'Slick
and beautiful, this compact book, fresh from the Byron Bay beach,
is a great introduction to the ancient art of yoga. It starts
with a brief explanation of how and why and then moves onto more
than 100 pages devoted to postures - simply illustrated, explained
as they would be in a class with details about how to get into
them and how long to stay in each, along with restful melodic
details about what is being stretched and stimulated.'

'There
are hundreds of books available at the moment about yoga, but
a new Australian book, Yoga Postures for your Body, Mind
& Soul by Jessie Chapman, has to be one of the most
contemporary and stylish - and it's a great one to leave open
on your coffee table. It features photographs (by Dhyan) that
are brilliant sculptural images in B&W, clearly showing you
the postures. Jessie, who grew up in a house in a lush rainforest
on the north coast of New South Wales, first began to practice
yoga in 1991. The experience has inspired her to encourage beginners
to learn this life-transforming healing art. The book covers more
than 30 yoga programs, including one for pregnant women and one
for use during menstruation.'

TEN: BOOK REVIEW
Title:
Yoga Postures for your Body Mind & Soul
Author: Jessie Chapman
Publisher: HarperCollins
Format: Soft cover, rrp $19.95
'This
is an attractive, well designed and well thought out book. What
I liked about it was the author Jessie Chapman of Byron Bay, did
not assume that we all know something about yoga. Right from the
beginning we are given a detailed introduction to yoga. What it
is, what the terms mean. We are given advice on when, where and
how to practice yoga, what clothes to wear, the importance of
breathing, commonsense rules and precautions.
We are then taken through the beautifully-shot yoga positions
(demonstrated by Jessie and friends on a Byron Bay beach with
the surf in the background - inspiring). Each position is photographed.
We do not have to assume anything.
And
the best bit is the index. Not just a bunch of hard to pronounce
words. Firstly there is an idex of all positions complete with
a stamp size photo of the position.
Then there's the breakdown of the types of yoga positions (with
pics) suitable for certain healing - relieving headache, backache,
rejuvenation, focus and balance
So if there is a particular
physical or emotional feeling you want to address, just flick
to the index. You don't have to wade through a plethora of terms.
Well
done Jessie!!
The
book contains all key postures, their benefits and healing potential;
practical tips on getting started with yoga; more than 30 yoga
courses; and a safe sequence for pregnant women. It's for novices,
yoga buffs and fitness freaks. RATED 10'

for the body, mind and soul
'Responding
to the rowing interest in Yoga, local Yoga practitioner Jessie
Chapman and photographer Dhyan have put together a book called
Yoga Postures for your Body Mind & Soul. Photographed
on the beaches of Byron Bay it is full of black and white pictures
of local Yoga practitioners demonstrating the physical postures
or asana's.
'Byron shires is full of yoga practitioners' says Jessie. 'We
are known around Australia and the world for our huge Yoga following
and excellent standards of Yoga teachers.'
Jessie says more and more people are discovering Yoga and the
physical postures. Some practice the physical postures to maintain
good physical health and for their remedial benefits. Some for
their ability to quiet and empty the mind of busy thoughts and
to relax, others to learn how to breathe slowly, deeply and fully.
'Yoga is a journey of self discovery and the practice of yoga
helps us to get in touch with ourselves and our highest potential.'
Designed for the beginner to the practice of yoga postures, the
book is easy to understand and follow. It gives lots of information
on how to position, breathe, hold and focus in the postures with
a list of benefits. The book also has easy to follow short courses,
some of which are remedial and help to relieve certain general
ailments such as stress, fatigue and premenstrual tension.'
